MAKE:Philly and Interactive Exhibition Design
11/19/2009 · Leave a Comment
Learn about interactive exhibition design at Make:Philly this Sunday!
This coming Sunday’s meeting (Nov 22nd) is all about interactive
exhibit design and development for museums and other educational
mediums. Our guest speaker is a rising star in the exhibit design
world and a past co-organizer of makephilly, art buggy derby and a
host of other creative endeavors in the area. Welcome back Dana!
:: GUEST SPEAKER ::
Dana Schloss is a curious and enthusiastic museum nerd. She has been
an exhibit fabricator, prototyper, museum educator, and exhibit
designer in many museums in Philadelphia and around the country. She’s
currently playing and prototyping on the New Science Centre Project
2011 at the Telus World of Science in Calgary. She will share her work
and experiences to date in exhibit design, fabrication and
education.
:: MAKER CHALLENGE ::
During the second half of this and every meeting we break into teams
and build something to meet the objective of the ‘maker challenge’.
For this meeting we’re going to design and build a “Maker’s Museum” –
a suite of museum style mini exhibits in just 45 minutes. Teams will
select a topic in the theme of “How Things Work” and build an exhibit
that teaches how something works through interaction and visuals but
without using any words. Teams will keep their topics secret from
other teams during construction. At the close of the meeting,
everyone will get the chance to tour the museum exhibits and guess
what each exhibit is about.

Each meeting is comprised of three parts, starting with members presenting projects they’re currently developing, followed by a great speaker, and finished off with the Maker Challenge – a hands-on fast paced building project that must be completed in 30-45 minutes.

Shelter project receives national media coverage
11/02/2009 · 1 Comment
Sophomore design project by Sebastian Brauer, Jin Hong, Jackie Starker, and Ji In Sun (currently seniors) was recently shown as part of So Re Fa, Socially Responsible Fashion Show, held during DesignPhiladelphia 2009. Writers and photographers for Ecouterre.com and Inhabitat.com were covering the event and featured the emergency shelter “Wear” group project, coverage that has since been picked up by Core77 and other sites.

SoReFa at North Bowl during DesignPhiladelphia 2009
Designed in response to the first project for sophomore design studio, “Emergency Shelter”, the group defined their user group as metropolitan residents in a time when emergencies are regular occurrences – creating the need for shelters as garments that the user can “Wear”. Their solution: three durable, watertight, and wind-resistant garments that are lightweight enough for everyday wear yet easily convertible into tents or sleeping bags that can brave the elements. Initial prototypes were constructed from repurposed thrift-store sleeping bags, exercise clothing, and performance jackets, the “Wearable Shelter” pieces act as protective all-weather gear in the day and insulating shelter at night.
More photos after the jump.
