The Penn Museum Exhibition Department is offering several unpaid internships for the summer of 2011.  These internships introduce individuals to several areas of the exhibition process— including exhibit development, design and installation, graphics production, object handling and exhibition lighting.  The areas the interns will work in are determined by the museum’s current work needs and the skills and preferences of the individual.

Duties may include the following:

• Organizing data for upcoming exhibitions
• Working on Architectural floor plans and details
• Installing exhibit elements including casework and objects
• Assist the design staff with the production of graphics for exhibitions
• Assisting in visitor research projects
• Working with Exhibition Developers to research content for upcoming exhibitions
• Developing and testing prototypes for exhibition interactives

Candidate should have an interest in and introductory knowledge of museum practices in addition to word–processing skills, the ability to move and lift heavy objects, multitasking skills and excellent written and oral communication skills. Experience with Vectorworks and the Adobe Suite is desirable but not essential. The intern’s work schedule and a schedule of projects will be determined in advance of the internship. Current studio art graduate students, MFA or related degree program students are invited to apply. Applicable majors include Industrial Design, Studio Art, Graphic Design, Architecture, Engineering, Sculpture, Art and World History, Education, Creative Writing or Theater.

Bahdeebahdu: “Bahdeebahdu is a working studio for design and the development of art, sculpture, furnishings and one-off products for our projects. Multidisciplinary in nature, the studio has become a destination for architects, designers, developers, artists and other similar visionaries. 2010 graduates Matt Braun (center) and Chris Mufalli (right) recently performed on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. They designed Tuned Pale Ale as part of their senior capstone project and one in a series of products the explored the musical affordances of everyday objects and their role in social spontaneity.  Click here for the full press release.

This year’s competition featured Alberto Alessi, the 2010 recipient of the Collab Design Excellence Award, and was held in conjunction with the PMA exhibition “Alessi: Ethical and Radical” that celebrates the innovative products of Italian manufacturer Alessi.
